The End of “File and Suspend”
If you have heard of the option “File and Suspend” there are changes coming. On November 2nd 2015 President Barack Obama signed a bill that cancelled this popular social security strategy within six months (180 days).
The file and suspend strategy has long been a well-kept secret to obtain “free” social security benefits. This strategy has helped couples get the most out of their benefits by having the higher income earner file and immediately suspend their benefits, therefore allowing their spouse to begin collecting spousal benefits and allowing their benefits to continue accumulating.
We are now in the phase-in period of this bill in which applicants for social security can still use this strategy, but it will soon no longer be available. If you have been advised to utilize this strategy please be aware of the aforementioned changes. For more details please contact us at Gainplan.
